Lockheed Martin Deploys AI to Enhance F-35 Combat ID
Lockheed Martin is applying artificial intelligence through its 'Project Overwatch' to enhance combat identification capabilities for the F-35 fighter jet. The project aims to accelerate the delivery of advanced solutions to warfighters to counter evolving threats.
- The recent flight test at Nellis Air Force Base marked the first time a tactical AI model processed on-board sensor data to generate an independent combat identification directly on a pilot's display. The AI model specifically focused on resolving ambiguities among electronic emitters, such as radar and communication signals, to improve situational awareness. - A key demonstrated capability was the rapid retraining of the AI model; engineers on the ground labeled newly detected emitters and retrained the model to recognize the new threat class within minutes. This updated model was then reloaded onto the jet for the next flight within the same mission planning cycle, a critical step toward creating adaptive combat systems. - The AI-generated identification data is presented to the pilot on their helmet-mounted display, augmenting the F-35's existing system which relies on a pre-loaded library of known threats. This allows the aircraft to better contend with novel or unexpected electronic signatures in a contested environment. - This initiative is part of the F-35's broader Block 4 modernization, a significant upgrade program that includes more than 75 major improvements to the jet's capabilities.
