Amazon Cuts 16,000 Jobs in AI Pivot

This recent cut of 16,000 corporate roles is the second major layoff in three months, following 14,000 positions eliminated in late 2025. Together, the 30,000 jobs represent approximately 10% of Amazon's global corporate workforce. The reductions are part of CEO Andy Jassy's initiative to flatten the organization, reduce bureaucracy, and increase the ratio of individual contributors to managers. The layoffs primarily impact corporate teams in divisions such as Amazon Web Services, Prime Video, and human resources, with warehouse and delivery workers currently unaffected. This workforce reduction aligns with a broader strategy of investing heavily in AI and automation. CEO Andy Jassy has stated that as generative AI is integrated more widely, fewer people will be needed for certain tasks, leading to a reduction in the total corporate workforce. This operational shift is backed by a massive capital expenditure, projected to exceed $100 billion in 2025, largely to build new data centers and scale AI and cloud infrastructure. The company is also investing up to $50 billion to expand AI and supercomputing capabilities specifically for its U.S. government customers through AWS. These investments support the "AI-ification" of every business unit and the development of new AI-powered services on platforms like Amazon Bedrock. In its fulfillment network, Amazon's AI pivot is already well underway. The company has deployed over a million AI-enabled robots and is advancing its "Supply Chain by Amazon" service, an end-to-end, automated logistics platform introduced in 2023. This system uses AI for demand forecasting, inventory placement, and optimizing warehouse robotics. Recent breakthroughs include using natural language commands for warehouse robots and generative AI for complex mapping problems, significantly improving operational efficiency.
