Austin’s Tastemaker winners

Austin handed out its 2026 Tastemaker Awards on April 9 and Odd Duck was named Restaurant of the Year, Daniela and Rosa Landaverde of La Santa Barbacha won Chefs of the Year, Parley took Bar of the Year, and Moderna Bar & Pizzeria snagged Best New Restaurant. Austin’s restaurant awards on April 9 doubled as a snapshot of where the city’s food scene is heading: Odd Duck took the top restaurant prize, La Santa Barbacha’s Daniela and Rosa Landaverde won for chefs, Parley won for bar, and Moderna Bar & Pizzeria won for best new restaurant. That mix tells you Austin is rewarding two different things at once in 2026: long-running places with deep roots and newer spots that arrived fast with a clear point of view. CultureMap handed out the awards at Distribution Hall after a nominee series and a live tasting event on April 9. Odd Duck’s win looks less like a surprise upset and more like a veteran finally cashing another check on years of consistency. The restaurant started as a trailer in 2009 and reopened as a brick-and-mortar restaurant in December 2013 after the original trailer site was sold for development. That history matters in Austin because the city still likes to tell its food story through trailers, farmers market produce, and chefs who grew up with the town instead of parachuting into it. Michelin’s Texas guide also lists Odd Duck as a Bib Gourmand, which is its value-focused category for strong cooking at a more approachable price. The chef award went to sisters Daniela and Rosa Landaverde, and their rise says as much about Austin as the restaurant winner does. They opened La Santa Barbacha in 2021, built it around Mexican barbacoa traditions from their family in central Mexico, and turned a food truck into one of the city’s most decorated casual spots. Michelin has now given La Santa Barbacha a Bib Gourmand in both the 2024 and 2025 Texas guides, which means the sisters are no longer just a local favorite with lines. They are already on the kind of credential ladder that national restaurant watchers use to spot who might break out next. Parley winning bar of the year shows how quickly East Austin can absorb a newcomer if the format fits the neighborhood. The bar opened on East César Chávez on December 19, 2025, and pitched itself as a neighborhood spot with cocktails, beer, coffee, and food served from morning to late night. Reviews have framed Parley as the more casual sibling to cocktail projects from the team behind Bar Hacienda and Here Nor There, with most drinks priced around 12 to 13 dollars instead of special-occasion prices. In a city full of destination bars, that is a useful lane: polished drinks without the velvet-rope energy. Moderna Bar & Pizzeria winning best new restaurant points to another Austin pattern: the city is still expanding beyond tacos and barbecue without giving up its appetite for casual formats. Moderna says it opened in December 2025, and just a few months later it had already landed on CultureMap’s best new restaurant list and then won the category outright. Put together, the winners map Austin’s current food identity pretty cleanly. One winner came from a 2009 trailer-to-restaurant story, one from sisters serving barbacoa from a 2021 truck, one from a neighborhood bar that opened in December 2025, and one from a new Italian restaurant that reached award status within about 90 days. Austin is still rewarding the old local script of trailers, neighborhood rooms, and ingredient-driven cooking, but it is now doing it under brighter lights from Michelin, media awards, and national chef watchlists. That is why a local awards night can function like an early scouting report for who the rest of the country may be talking about next.
