Microsoft Preps 'E7' Tier for AI Agents

Microsoft is reportedly preparing a new, top-tier "E7" plan for Microsoft 365, designed to deploy advanced AI agents and automation for its largest enterprise clients. This strategic push is complemented by partnerships with firms like Integrity Marketing Group, which is collaborating with Microsoft to embed AI across its entire organization.

The rumored E7 tier signals Microsoft's strategic move to license AI agents as "digital workers." This new plan would require enterprises to license each deployed AI agent, much like a human employee, providing them with identities, email accounts, and access to services like Teams. At a rumored price point of around $99 per user per month, the E7 SKU is expected to bundle the existing high-end E5 plan with Microsoft 365 Copilot (which costs an additional $30/month) and a new management service. This integrated package aims to simplify licensing for companies heavily investing in AI automation, avoiding the complexity of multiple add-on subscriptions. The core of the new offering is a service codenamed "Agent 365," designed as a control plane to manage and govern the deployment of AI agents across an organization. This platform will likely integrate with Microsoft's security and identity tools, such as Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), Defender, and Purview, to ensure compliance and control over the AI workforce. This licensing model reflects a broader industry shift from AI-assisted tasks to "AI-orchestrated operations." Microsoft's strategy focuses on "agentic AI," where autonomous agents can manage complex, multi-step workflows, moving beyond simple productivity enhancements to fundamentally transform business processes in areas like sales, operations, and customer service. The jump from the E5 tier to E7 represents a significant escalation in capabilities and cost. The E5 plan, which costs roughly $57-$60 per user per month, already includes advanced security, compliance, analytics, and voice features over the standard E3 plan. E7 aims to capture the value of AI agents that can operate 24/7, justifying the premium by positioning them as a new class of worker.
