GitLab + Google Cloud agents

GitLab expanded collaboration with Google Cloud so AI agents in its Duo Agent Platform can call foundation models through Vertex AI while agent actions remain governed by GitLab’s compliance and audit controls. (stocktitan.net) (itwire.com).

Software teams using GitLab can now route its artificial intelligence agents to Google Cloud’s Vertex AI models, including Gemini, without giving up GitLab’s approval, access, and audit controls. (about.gitlab.com) GitLab announced the expanded Google Cloud partnership on April 14, 2026. The company said customers can run GitLab’s Artificial Intelligence Gateway on Google Cloud and use Vertex AI models without provisioning separate artificial intelligence infrastructure. (about.gitlab.com) An artificial intelligence agent is software that takes multi-step actions, not just writes a single answer. GitLab’s Duo Agent Platform lets agents plan work, write code, review changes, and remediate security findings across the software delivery process. (about.gitlab.com) Vertex AI is Google Cloud’s platform for accessing and managing foundation models, which are large general-purpose models that can be adapted to many tasks. GitLab said joint customers can choose models from Vertex AI Model Garden based on performance, cost, or regulatory requirements. (about.gitlab.com) GitLab is trying to solve a problem many companies hit after adding coding assistants: faster code generation does not automatically speed up testing, security review, approvals, and deployment. When GitLab introduced general availability for Duo Agent Platform on January 15, 2026, it said only about 20% of a developer’s time is spent writing code. (about.gitlab.com) That is why governance is central to this deal. GitLab said agent actions will still run inside its existing policy framework, including compliance controls and audit trails that enterprise customers use to track who did what and when. (about.gitlab.com) The commercial angle is also explicit. GitLab said customers with existing Google Cloud commitments can count Duo Agent Platform usage toward that committed cloud spend, which can make adoption easier for companies already locked into annual purchasing targets. (about.gitlab.com) GitLab has been widening its options for regulated and self-managed customers in recent months. In February 2026, the company said GitLab 18.9 added self-hosted Duo Agent Platform support and bring-your-own-model options for organizations that want tighter control over where models run. (about.gitlab.com) Google Cloud, for its part, has been adding more agent tooling around Vertex AI. Google’s release notes show Vertex AI Agent Builder added generally available code execution on February 18, 2026, part of a broader push to make Google Cloud a platform for enterprise agents rather than only standalone chatbots. (docs.cloud.google.com) The immediate result is simple: GitLab customers can keep their software workflow in GitLab, tap Google’s model catalog through Vertex AI, and keep the paper trail enterprises usually demand when software changes are made by machines as well as humans.
