Roots Steakhouse to Open in Rumson, NJ
Roots Steakhouse will open a new location in Rumson, New Jersey. The upscale restaurant, which specializes in steak and seafood, will take over the space formerly occupied by the Salt Creek Grille.
- The previous tenant, Salt Creek Grille, closed its doors on December 31, 2025, after 27 years in business at the Rumson location. The reason for the closure was the end of their lease. - Roots Steakhouse is owned by the Harvest Restaurant Group, which was founded by the Grabowski family in 1996 with the opening of Trap Rock Restaurant & Brewery in Berkeley Heights. The group now operates 13 restaurants and a catering division mostly in northern and central New Jersey. - The Rumson restaurant will be the sixth New Jersey location for Roots Steakhouse, with other locations in Summit, Morristown, Ridgewood, and Princeton, which also has a Roots Ocean Prime. - While a specific opening date for the Rumson location has not been announced, renovations of the former Salt Creek Grille space are currently in progress. - The menu at Roots Steakhouse is known for its high-end offerings, including prime cuts of steak like a dry-aged cowboy steak, fresh seafood, and sides such as roasted wild mushrooms. - A notable operational choice by the Harvest Restaurant Group is that none of their restaurant locations have televisions, a decision made to encourage conversation and connection among diners. - The original Salt Creek Grille was a small chain with another New Jersey location in Princeton that also closed in October 2025, citing challenges that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. - The property on the Navesink River that housed Salt Creek Grille and will now be home to Roots Steakhouse is owned by longtime Rumson resident and philanthropist Nancy Mulheren.
