Gauff Retires With 'Scary' Injury
World No. 4 Coco Gauff retired early against Alex Eala at Indian Wells with what's being called a 'scary' arm injury — only the second retirement of her career. The withdrawal raises concerns about her short-term future on tour, while Eala advances to the Round of 16 in another breakthrough for the rising Filipina star. Defending champion Mirra Andreeva crashed out in the third round, losing all 1,000 ranking points and setting up a major WTA rankings shake-up.
Gauff described the pain as feeling "like a firework was going off inside of my arm," a sensation she had never experienced before. The injury, which is suspected to be nerve-related, began early in the second game of the first set and progressively worsened. Gauff plans to get an MRI but is hopeful the issue is not long-term and that she will be fit for the upcoming Miami Open. This marks only the second mid-match retirement of the 21-year-old's career. Her only previous retirement occurred in Cincinnati in 2022 due to an ankle injury against Marie Bouzkova. Before the stoppage, Gauff had received a medical timeout while trailing 5-2 and had her lower left arm heavily strapped for the start of the second set. The victory continues a rapid ascent for Alex Eala, who became the first Filipino player to reach the Round of 16 at Indian Wells. Currently ranked World No. 32, the 20-year-old has seen her profile skyrocket in the past year, particularly after a run to the semifinals of the 2025 Miami Open where she defeated three Grand Slam champions. Eala and Gauff had played just last month in Dubai, with Gauff winning that encounter. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva's title defense ended in a dramatic 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 loss to Katerina Siniakova. The defeat means she will drop 935 of the 1,000 ranking points she earned from her surprising 2025 victory, putting her position in the WTA top 10 under immediate threat. Last year, at 17, she became the youngest Indian Wells champion since Serena Williams in 1999.
