OpenAI shifts pricing tiers

OpenAI published documentation introducing more flexible pricing for Enterprise, Education and Business plans and clarified billing differences between ChatGPT workspaces and API platform usage. Separately, reporting says OpenAI has introduced a revamped $100/month Pro plan aimed at Codex and developer users. (help.openai.com) (startupnews.fyi)

OpenAI has redrawn its paid lineup, adding flexible billing for workplace plans and a new $100-a-month Pro option for heavier Codex use. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) The workplace change took effect on April 2, 2026, when ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise added two seat types: a standard ChatGPT seat and a Codex-only seat. OpenAI said the new setup uses shared credits for usage beyond included limits. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) For ChatGPT Business, standard seats now cost $25 a month on monthly billing or $20 a month on annual billing, with a two-seat minimum. Codex seats have no fixed monthly seat charge, but any activity on those seats requires workspace credits. (help.openai.com) (openai.com) OpenAI also used the rollout to clear up a common billing confusion: ChatGPT workspaces and the application programming interface platform are separate systems. Charges, billing history, and subscriptions for chatgpt.com do not carry over to platform.openai.com, and application programming interface usage is billed separately. (help.openai.com) (openai.com) The new structure shifts ChatGPT workplace plans closer to cloud-style metering. OpenAI’s help documentation says credits can unlock extra access to advanced models and features such as Deep Research, Thinking models, image generation, Advanced Voice, and Codex when users go past included limits. (help.openai.com 1) (help.openai.com 2) That same credit system is now showing up in consumer plans too. OpenAI’s help center says Plus and Pro users can buy credits as a pay-as-you-go add-on, and those credits currently work across supported features including Codex for Plus and Pro users and Sora for all users. (help.openai.com) (help.openai.com) Separately, OpenAI has introduced a lower-priced Pro tier at $100 a month alongside its existing $200 Pro plan. OpenAI’s Pro help page says users can switch between the $100 and $200 versions from Settings, and TechCrunch reported on April 9 that the $100 tier offers five times more Codex than Plus. (help.openai.com) (techcrunch.com) OpenAI’s own help text describes the $100 plan as “another option” for people who want Pro capabilities with lower usage, while the Pro plan comparison in the help center says Pro users get five times higher limits than Plus and ten times Codex usage versus Plus. The $200 Pro plan remains available even though OpenAI’s public pricing page emphasizes the lower tiers. (help.openai.com) (help.openai.com) (tech.yahoo.com) The result is a broader ladder: $20 Plus for lighter use, $100 Pro for people hitting coding limits, workplace seats for teams, and separate token billing on the application programming interface side. OpenAI is pricing ChatGPT less like a single subscription and more like a mix of seat licenses and metered compute. (help.openai.com) (help.openai.com) (openai.com)
