Call of Duty Black Ops Royale Launches

Call of Duty will launch "Black Ops Royale" on March 13 — a free battle royale mode inspired by Blackout, available to all Warzone players. The mode features classic Call of Duty gunplay, squad-based tactics, and expansive maps designed for replayable large-scale encounters.

Call of Duty's first foray into the battle royale genre was "Blackout" in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018), which featured a player count that started at 80 and later increased. This mode was the franchise's initial answer to the growing popularity of battle royale games. The massively popular free-to-play "Warzone" followed in March 2020, developed by Infinity Ward and Raven Software, and quickly surpassed 100 million players by April 2021. It introduced mechanics like the Gulag, where eliminated players could fight for a chance to redeploy, a feature absent in the new Black Ops Royale. Developed by Treyarch, Black Ops Royale is a deliberate return to the roots of the original Blackout, removing staples of the recent Warzone era. Players will drop into the new Avalon map without custom loadouts, a cash system, or Buy Stations, emphasizing on-the-ground scavenging for weapons and gear. The new mode will support 100 players divided into 25 squads. While there's no Gulag, players can get back into the action by finding a Redeploy Token or by having their teammates capture a Redeployment Tower. Black Ops Royale introduces "Weapon Archetypes," a system where ground-loot weapons have fixed attachment paths and can be upgraded in rarity from Common to Legendary by finding Attachment Kits. The mode also sees the return of Blackout-style equipment, including the Grappling Hook and Sensor Dart. The playing field, Avalon, is a large-scale map that will evolve with seasonal updates. Players will navigate the terrain using wingsuits for infiltration and will have access to vehicles for land, sea, and air traversal. The traditional gas circle is replaced by an electrical field. Optional in-match activities will provide squads with opportunities to earn high-tier loot. These include "Target Uplink Stations" for player bounties and defending a "Surprise Shipment" from robotic enemies. The HUD has also been updated to display more critical information at a glance, such as enemy health values and weapon rarity.
