UCLA Dominates Iowa Women's Basketball
No. 2 UCLA crushed No. 9 Iowa 96-45 to clinch their second straight women's Big Ten Tournament title. Gianna Kneepkens scored 19 points while Kiki Rice added 15 points and eight assists in the Indianapolis finals.
The 51-point margin of victory was the largest in the history of the Big Ten Tournament championship game, shattering the previous record of 33 points set by Iowa in 2023. UCLA's offensive onslaught was relentless, setting a new Big Ten Tournament record with 34 assists on 40 made field goals and shooting a blistering 63.5% from the floor. This championship marks UCLA's first-ever back-to-back conference tournament titles. The Bruins have been on a dominant run, extending their school-record winning streak to 25 games and remaining undefeated in Big Ten play for 24 consecutive games, including last season's tournament. UCLA's perfect 18-0 record in the Big Ten regular season was a historic achievement, making them only the fourth team in conference history to go undefeated in league play. Their dominance was evident in their average margin of victory, which exceeded 25 points per game in conference matchups. The Bruins' roster is stacked with talent, featuring seven McDonald's All-Americans. The team's success is a collective effort, with four players averaging double-digit points per game: Lauren Betts (16.7), Kiki Rice (15.3), Gabriela Jaquez (14.1), and Gianna Kneepkens (13.2). For Iowa, the loss snapped an impressive eight-game winning streak heading into the final. This season marked a new era for the Hawkeyes under first-year head coach Jan Jensen, following the departure of superstar Caitlin Clark to the WNBA. Iowa's all-conference forward Hannah Stuelke was notably hampered, playing through a right elbow injury and an illness. She was held scoreless in the championship game, a significant factor for a team that had otherwise successfully navigated the post-Clark era. With the conference title secured, UCLA is projected to be a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and is in the conversation for the top overall seed. Despite the lopsided loss, Iowa is expected to receive a No. 2 seed, setting them up to host the first two rounds.
