Apple May Use Google Cloud for AI Siri

Apple is reportedly considering using Google's servers to store data for its next-generation, AI-powered Siri. The potential move highlights the immense infrastructure demands of large language models and signals a pragmatic, if surprising, partnership between the two tech giants for AI workloads.

This partnership goes beyond just licensing AI models; Apple is in talks with Google to host the revamped Siri in Google's data centers. To meet Apple's stringent privacy requirements, Google is looking into setting up dedicated servers specifically for this purpose. The multi-year collaboration will see the next generation of Apple's Foundation Models built upon Google's Gemini models and cloud infrastructure. Apple has publicly stated that after a thorough evaluation, it determined Google's AI technology offers the most capable foundation for its future AI features. This move is a significant shift for Apple, which has historically prioritized vertical integration and building its own infrastructure. The immense computational demands of advanced AI have led Apple to adopt a hybrid strategy, combining its own "Private Cloud Compute" with external providers like Google and AWS. While Apple continues to invest in its own data centers, its spending has been more cautious compared to rivals. In its 2025 fiscal year, Apple's capital expenditure on property and equipment was $12.7 billion, a fraction of Google's projected $90 billion investment in the same period. The revamped, more conversational Siri is expected to be a core feature of "Apple Intelligence." This updated assistant will leverage on-device processing for privacy on personal tasks but will rely on cloud infrastructure for more complex queries. This collaboration signals a pragmatic approach from Apple to catch up in the generative AI race after its own efforts to overhaul Siri faced delays. The partnership aims to bring a more personalized and capable Siri to users later this year.
