Gisèle Pelicot Healing Memoir

French survivor Gisèle Pelicot is releasing memoir *A Hymn to Life* while advocating for healing after her testimony in France's landmark mass rape trial in 2024. Pelicot spoke about rejecting shame and finding new love, hoping her story will inspire others to seek brighter futures.

- For nearly a decade, from 2011 to 2020, Gisèle Pelicot's then-husband, Dominique Pelicot, drugged her with sleeping pills and muscle relaxants two to three times a week. While she was unconscious, he invited men he met online to rape her, filming and photographing the abuse. - In total, 51 men, ranging in age from 26 to 74 and from various professions including a firefighter and a nurse, were put on trial alongside Dominique Pelicot. All were convicted, with Dominique Pelicot receiving the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The other men received sentences ranging from three to 15 years. - The investigation uncovered a vast collection of evidence, including hundreds of videos and potentially thousands of photos that Dominique Pelicot had meticulously filed. Investigators identified at least 92 separate rape incidents committed by 72 different men; however, not all perpetrators could be identified. - Gisèle Pelicot chose to waive her right to anonymity, a decision that is uncommon for survivors of sexual abuse in France, in order to, in her words, make "shame swap sides." This act of bravery has been widely praised and has turned her into a feminist icon in France and internationally. - The trial has ignited a significant public debate in France about the legal definition of rape and the concept of consent. Current French law defines rape based on the presence of violence, coercion, threat, or surprise, but does not explicitly mention the absence of consent, a point highlighted as a critical issue by legal experts following this case. - Beyond the rapes, Dominique Pelicot was also found guilty of taking indecent images of his daughter and two daughters-in-law. He is also under investigation in connection with the 1991 rape and murder of an estate agent. - Public support for Gisèle Pelicot has been immense, with crowds gathering to applaud her outside the courthouse daily during the trial. She has received messages of support from prominent figures, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Queen Camilla of the UK.
