Pokémon Champions Hits Switch in April
Pokémon Champions will arrive on Nintendo Switch in April 2026, building on classic Pokémon battling with expanded features and new competition modes. The title promises to appeal to both competitive and casual strategists with robust battling and management mechanics. This marks a significant addition to the Switch's strategy game library for 2026.
*Pokémon Champions* is developed by The Pokémon Works, a joint venture between The Pokémon Company and ILCA. ILCA previously led development on *Pokémon Brilliant Diamond* and *Shining Pearl* and has been responsible for developing and maintaining the *Pokémon HOME* cloud service. This title marks a major shift for the official Pokémon esports scene. Starting in 2026, *Pokémon Champions* will become the official software for the Pokémon Video Game Championships (VGC), including the World Championships, replacing the mainline series games like *Pokémon Scarlet* and *Violet* for the first time since the VGC's inception in 2009. The game is a "free-to-start" title, allowing players to download and begin playing without an initial purchase. This model will be supported by optional in-game purchases and a Battle Pass system. A paid digital version that includes a "Starter Pack" bundle will also be available for purchase on the Nintendo eShop. *Champions* is designed to be a dedicated platform for competitive play, removing the need to complete a story campaign to access tournament-ready Pokémon. The gameplay is described as being closer in spirit to the *Pokémon Stadium* series on the Nintendo 64, focusing purely on battle mechanics. The game will launch with Mega Evolution, a popular battle mechanic first introduced in *Pokémon X* and *Y*. It will also feature Terastallization from *Pokémon Scarlet* and *Violet*, with plans to eventually incorporate other battle systems like Z-Moves and Dynamax. Players can import their existing creatures from other games via *Pokémon HOME*, including a special promotion to transfer specific Pokémon from the upcoming *Pokémon Legends: Z-A* to unlock Mega Stones in *Champions*. However, Pokémon obtained within *Champions* itself cannot be transferred out to *Pokémon HOME*. A version of the game for iOS and Android devices is scheduled to launch in the summer of 2026, following the April debut on Switch. These versions will feature cross-platform play, allowing mobile and console players to battle each other online.
