Nvidia Hits 95% GPU Market Share

Nvidia now dominates the discrete GPU market with an unprecedented 95% share, as AMD Radeon sales have cratered to a historic low. The GeForce RTX 5070 family is becoming the standard for creators, with benchmarks showing the 5070 Ti outperforming AMD's flagship in video encoding and AI tasks. This near-monopoly makes the entire video processing industry heavily dependent on Nvidia's roadmap and pricing.

Nvidia's dominance isn't just on the hardware front; its CUDA parallel computing platform creates a powerful vendor lock-in. This software ecosystem, which includes over 400 libraries and tools, is deeply integrated into AI and machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch, making it difficult for developers to switch to competing hardware. The company’s data center business is now its main revenue driver, accounting for 91% of its $68.1 billion in sales in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. This segment saw a 75% year-over-year revenue increase, fueled by demand from major cloud providers like AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure for AI training and inference. While the consumer-facing GPU market sees fluctuations, the demand for AI-specific hardware in data centers continues to surge. Nvidia's total revenue for fiscal 2026 reached a record $215.9 billion, a 65% increase from the previous year, highlighting the immense growth in the AI infrastructure sector. AMD's discrete GPU market share fell to just 5% in 2025, a significant drop from 8% at the start of the year. Over the course of 2025, AMD lost more than two-thirds of its discrete GPU market share, which stood at roughly 17% at the end of Q4 2024. This decline is attributed to factors including a less competitive high-end offering and superior software support from Nvidia. Looking ahead, Nvidia has already announced its next-generation "Rubin" platform, signaling an aggressive roadmap focused on increasing performance and reducing costs for AI workloads. The company projects continued strong growth, with a revenue forecast of $78.0 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2027.
