Ghana Heritage Caravan Hits Day 5

Ghana's Heritage Caravan reached Day 5 on March 6 with participants visiting a historic sword site, enjoying local food, and engaging in karaoke. The 10th edition during Heritage Month 2026 emphasizes deep cultural immersion through hands-on heritage experiences.

The Heritage Caravan is an eight-day road trip that journeys through 14 of Ghana's regions, organized by Citi FM and Channel One TV. More than 200 participants, known as "Caravanites," are taking part in this 10th-anniversary edition, which utilizes four buses to accommodate the increased number of travelers. This annual tour is a cornerstone of Ghana's Heritage Month, a national initiative launched by the Ghana Tourism Authority in March 2017. The month-long celebration aligns with Ghana's Independence Day on March 6th and aims to encourage Ghanaians to celebrate and patronize local culture, food, fashion, music, and travel. The visit to the Okomfo Anokye Sword Site in Kumasi connects participants with a profound piece of Ashanti Kingdom history. The sword was planted in the ground by the powerful priest Okomfo Anokye in the late 17th century as a symbol of unity and has remained immovable for over 300 years. Legend holds that the removal of the sword would signify the collapse of the Ashanti Kingdom. This sacred site, located on the grounds of a teaching hospital, represents the spiritual foundation of the Asante people and the enduring legacy of Okomfo Anokye, who also commanded the Golden Stool from the heavens. The Caravan's itinerary is designed to offer a comprehensive cultural immersion, going beyond historical sites. Past tours have included visits to Mole National Park, Cape Coast Castle, and Manhyia Palace, alongside experiences like food bazaars and traditional dance performances. The initiative serves a dual purpose: fostering a deeper appreciation for Ghana's diverse heritage among locals and promoting domestic tourism. It has become a much-anticipated event, with the 2025 edition selling out weeks in advance. A wide array of corporate sponsors supports the Heritage Caravan, including insurance companies, banks, and food and beverage brands. This partnership highlights the event's significance as both a cultural expedition and a platform for promoting Ghanaian products and businesses. Participants are a diverse group, ranging in age from their early 20s to mid-70s, and include both first-time explorers of Ghana and seasoned travelers. The journey is often described as an opportunity to de-stress and connect with the country on a deeper level.
