Latvia Pledges €10 Million to Ukraine via NATO Fund
Latvia has allocated €10 million to support Ukraine through a NATO fund. The contribution reinforces the continued military and financial aid flowing from Eastern European allies to Ukraine.
- The €10 million contribution is designated for NATO's Comprehensive Assistance Package (CAP) for Ukraine, a multi-year program aimed at rebuilding Ukraine's security and defense sector and improving interoperability with NATO forces. - This fund provides non-lethal military aid, covering areas with significant tech and logistics opportunities for contractors, such as secure communications, cyber defense, C4 (Command, Control, Communications, and Computers) modernization, and counter-drone equipment. - Latvia has a broader security agreement with Ukraine, committing to provide annual military support equal to at least 0.25% of its GDP through 2026. In 2025, its military aid to Ukraine reached 0.3% of its GDP. - This financial pledge is part of a deeper industrial partnership; Latvia and Ukraine signed a memorandum on defense-industrial cooperation focusing on joint production, particularly of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). - Latvia, along with the United Kingdom, is a leader of the "Drone Coalition," which aims to supply Ukraine with one million drones. Latvia has specifically allocated €20 million for this coalition in 2024 and plans to contribute a similar amount in 2025. - In addition to financial contributions, Latvia's direct military transfers to Ukraine have included Stinger air defense systems, helicopters, howitzers, and armored personnel carriers. - The NATO CAP fund is one of several acquisition channels for supporting Ukraine; NATO also coordinates aid through mechanisms like the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) and the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) mission, creating multiple avenues for defense industry involvement.
