The surge in visitors generated an estimated €3.9 billion in tourist expenditure, an 18.6% rise from the previous year. The United Kingdom was the largest source of tourists, with 841,397 visitors in 2025, followed by Italy and Poland. On average, each visitor spent €971, contributing to a significant boost in the local economy. This growth in tourism led to the sharpest increase in overnight stays in the European Union. A key driver of this buzz is a targeted social media campaign called "Meet Me in Malta: The Social Bucket List." This initiative utilized high-profile TikTok and Instagram creators to showcase the islands' attractions to Gen Z and Millennial audiences in the United States, Australia, and Europe. The campaign focused on authentic, shareable experiences, from exploring historic sites like Valletta and Mdina to kayaking in Comino's Blue Lagoon. Malta's culinary scene is also a major draw, with a unique fusion of Mediterranean flavors. The national dish is *Stuffat tal-Fenek*, a slow-cooked rabbit stew. Other popular traditional foods include *Pastizzi*, flaky pastries filled with ricotta or mushy peas, and *Bragioli*, stuffed beef rolls simmered in a rich tomato sauce. The country's efforts in tourism are also gaining official recognition. The Malta Tourism Authority has launched the Malta Tourism Awards to honor excellence and sustainable practices within the industry. These awards recognize the best in accommodation, catering, and travel services, further cementing Malta's reputation as a top-tier destination.
