Gallant Partners on Stem Cell Vet Therapy

Gallant's therapy, sonruvetcel, is a potential first-in-class treatment for refractory feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS), a severe oral disease in cats that often leads to euthanasia due to a lack of effective treatments. The company is on track for FDA conditional approval in early 2026, which would make it the first FDA-approved, off-the-shelf stem cell therapy in veterinary medicine. The treatment uses allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells, meaning they are sourced from healthy, FDA-qualified feline donors rather than the patient. This allows the product to be manufactured in advance, stored, and shipped to clinics for immediate use, a significant advantage over autologous therapies that require harvesting cells from the sick animal. This "off-the-shelf" model necessitates an ultra-low temperature (ULT) cold chain, storing the therapy at temperatures between -40°C and -86°C to preserve the living cells. Maintaining these temperatures from manufacturing to the veterinary clinic is critical to ensure the therapy's viability and effectiveness. MWI Animal Health is one of the largest animal health distributors in the U.S. and U.K., with a network of 19 distribution centers. Their role will be to manage the complex logistics of this new ULT supply chain, ensuring veterinarians across the country can receive the temperature-sensitive therapy with next-day service. Gallant is also developing a pipeline of other regenerative therapies for conditions like canine and feline osteoarthritis, canine atopic dermatitis, and feline chronic kidney disease. The company has previously launched a service for banking a pet's own stem cells, collected during routine spay or neuter procedures, for future use.
