X restricts programmatic replies via API

To combat spam, X (formerly Twitter) has announced restrictions on programmatic replies made via its API. Automated replies are now only permitted if the original post @mentioned or quoted the replying account. The change, which impacts adtech and social media automation tools, does not apply to the Enterprise API tier.

- This API update is part of a broader strategy to monetize X's data and combat bots, which has included significant price increases for its various API tiers. The Basic plan, for instance, doubled from $100 to $200 per month, while the Pro plan is priced at $5,000 per month. - The initial shift away from a generous free API tier in February 2023 was positioned as a measure against bots but was widely seen as a move to generate revenue. This has led to many third-party applications, including social media management tools like Later and Make, dropping support for the platform. - For programmatic advertising in the UK, where over 85% of the approximately £30.6 billion in digital ad spend was programmatic in 2023, this change could impact tools that rely on social signals for targeting and analytics. The market is projected to grow, with a strong focus on AI-driven optimization and new channels like Connected TV and Digital Out-of-Home. - The transition to a CTO role in a B2B SaaS company requires a shift from hands-on coding to strategic leadership, focusing on aligning technology with business goals, scaling the engineering organization, and managing cross-functional collaboration. A key challenge is balancing technical debt with innovation and resisting custom development for individual clients to maintain a scalable product. - AI agents and agentic workflows are a growing trend in enterprise automation, with AI agents capable of autonomous decision-making and managing complex tasks with minimal human oversight. Gartner predicts that by 2028, one-third of enterprise software applications will include agentic AI. - London's tech ecosystem remains a major hub for investment, with AI startups raising a record $3.5 billion in 2024. The city is home to 43 unicorn companies and saw nearly $10 billion raised for new VC funds in 2024. - In Formula 1, following pre-season testing in Bahrain, Mercedes has announced its 2026 Junior Programme, and former world champion Damon Hill has returned to Williams as a team ambassador. - Recent local news in London includes a major 14-month repair plan for the Queen's Bridge, a key route connecting downtown to the west end, and workers at the London Nestle ice cream plant expressing concern over a potential sale.
