EdTech Platform Adds High Contrast Mode

Math platform Brainingcamp announced it has added new accessibility features, including a "High Contrast" mode. The update is part of a wider trend in EdTech to proactively build in features that support diverse learning needs and meet compliance standards.

Brainingcamp's move to the WCAG 2.2 AA standard is a step ahead of the current legal benchmark for many public institutions. The Department of Justice's (DOJ) final rule on Title II of the ADA mandates WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance for public colleges and universities. This requirement ensures that digital content, including course materials and learning platforms, is accessible to students with disabilities. For large public entities serving 50,000 or more people, the compliance deadline is April 24, 2026. Smaller public institutions have until April 2027 to comply. These regulations cover a wide range of digital resources, from public-facing websites to internal learning management systems and procured third-party software. The legal stakes for non-compliance are significant, with a history of litigation against major universities. Institutions like Florida State University, Penn State, and Louisiana Tech have all faced lawsuits over inaccessible course materials and technology. Recent cases against UCLA and West Virginia University in 2025 highlight ongoing challenges with both physical and digital accessibility on campus. This regulatory pressure is driving the adoption of frameworks like Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL encourages the proactive design of flexible learning environments and materials to be accessible from the start, reducing the need for retrofitting accommodations. By providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression, UDL aims to improve the educational experience for all students. The shift towards higher accessibility standards is not limited to the United States. The European Accessibility Act (EAA) mandates that as of June 28, 2025, all digital educational content distributed in the EU must comply with WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards. This global trend puts pressure on EdTech companies to build in accessibility to remain competitive.
