Axel Springer Acquires Bisnow
German media conglomerate Axel Springer has acquired Bisnow, a leading commercial real estate media and events company. The deal, backed by private equity firm The Wicks Group, marks a significant consolidation in the B2B media and events industry.
This acquisition is part of Axel Springer's significant push into the U.S. market, following high-profile purchases like *Business Insider* for $442 million in 2015 and *Politico* for over $1 billion in 2021. The German media giant has been actively acquiring digital-first media companies to expand its English-speaking audience and diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional journalism. Bisnow will be integrated into a newly formed division called Brew Media Group, alongside another of Axel Springer's recent acquisitions, the business newsletter Morning Brew. This new group will be headed by Robert Dippell, the current CEO of Morning Brew Inc., indicating a strategic focus on growing a portfolio of specialized B2B media brands. Bisnow and Morning Brew will, however, operate as separate and independent companies. The deal also marks a successful exit for The Wicks Group, the private equity firm that acquired Bisnow in 2016 for an estimated $50 million. Under the leadership of CEO Gregg Mayer, who will remain in his role, Bisnow has expanded its global footprint, now hosting over 400 live events annually across 47 markets in the U.S., Canada, the UK, and Ireland. This acquisition reflects a broader trend of consolidation within the commercial real estate and B2B media landscapes. As the industry becomes increasingly digital, larger media conglomerates are seeking to acquire niche publications and event companies with dedicated audiences and strong data insights. The move also aligns with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner's vision of focusing on AI-based journalism and expanding media marketing platforms.
