Adani Group Pledges $100B for AI Data Centers
Indian conglomerate Adani Group announced it will invest $100 billion by 2035 to build AI data center infrastructure powered by renewable energy. The company expects the major investment to catalyze an additional $150 billion in related investments. The move signals a massive commitment to building out the foundational infrastructure required for large-scale AI.
- The investment aims to expand Adani's data center capacity to 5 gigawatts (GW) by 2035, a significant increase from the existing 2 GW platform operated through its joint venture, AdaniConnex. A portion of this GPU capacity will be allocated to Indian AI startups and research institutions to address domestic compute shortages. - Powering this ambitious project is Adani Green Energy's 30 GW renewable energy project in Khavda, Gujarat, which is set to be the world's largest. More than 10 GW of this project's capacity is already operational. - This initiative is part of a broader strategy for India's "sovereign AI," aiming to reduce dependence on foreign cloud providers and ensure the nation's critical data and AI workloads are hosted domestically. - The project includes strategic partnerships with major global technology firms. Adani is collaborating with Google to develop a gigawatt-scale AI data center campus in Visakhapatnam and is working with Microsoft on projects in Hyderabad and Pune. - AdaniConnex, a 50:50 joint venture with U.S.-based data center operator EdgeConneX, is a key entity in executing this plan. The joint venture is already developing hyperscale data centers in Chennai, Navi Mumbai, Noida, Vizag, and Hyderabad. - The plan includes the use of advanced technologies like liquid cooling and high-efficiency power design to manage the high-density energy needs of AI computing. - This investment is part of a larger trend of significant AI infrastructure investment in India, with conglomerates led by billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani committing a combined $210 billion. The Indian government is also fostering this growth through initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission, which is infusing over $1 billion into the nation's AI ecosystem.
