Iowa to Launch Special Education Family Portal
Iowa is launching the ACHIEVE Family Portal to streamline special education data management for families. The portal is designed to make the IEP and 504 plan processes more transparent and accessible. This move reflects a broader trend toward using technology to improve communication and data sharing between schools and families of students with disabilities.
- The ACHIEVE Family Portal is scheduled to launch the week of February 24, 2025, with eligible families receiving email invitations to create an account. - During the 2023-2024 school year, there were 75,855 students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in Iowa who could potentially be served by the new portal. - The Iowa Department of Education has stated that this will be the first system in the nation to provide families with 24/7 access to both Early ACCESS (Individualized Family Service Plan) and special education (IEP) records in one place. - The development of the broader ACHIEVE system, which houses the state's IEP and Child Find processes, began in May 2022 to create a more consistent and intuitive statewide platform. - In addition to viewing IEP and 504 plan documents, the portal will allow families to see real-time progress toward goals, receive and view meeting notices, sign consent forms, and complete family engagement surveys. - For comparison, Connecticut launched a similar statewide parent portal called CT-SEDS on July 1, 2022, which also allows parents to view and sign special education documents. - The portal is an optional tool, and families will still retain their rights to receive paper copies of all documents and to meet with their IEP or IFSP teams in person. - Barbara Guy, Chief of the Iowa Department of Education's Bureau of Student and Family Special Education Services, noted the portal is an innovative approach to support family partnerships with educational teams.
