Command & Conquer Renegade Successor Hits 1.0
After 12 years in beta, a fan-made spiritual successor to Command & Conquer: Renegade finally reached full 1.0 release. The project represents two decades of development and showcases the dedication of the strategy gaming community. This milestone delivers a finished experience for fans of the original's unique blend of FPS and RTS gameplay.
The fan-made successor, *Renegade X*, began not as a standalone game but as a mod for *Unreal Tournament 3* back in 2006. The volunteer development team, Totem Arts, was co-founded by Waqas Iqbal and Martin Palko with the goal of remaking the original *Command & Conquer: Renegade*. After an initial mod release in 2009, the team shifted to developing a free, standalone game using the Unreal Development Kit. A single-player mini-campaign titled *Renegade X: Black Dawn* was released in January 2012 to showcase the standalone game's potential. This was followed by the first open beta of the multiplayer component on February 26, 2014, which has been continuously updated and supported for the past decade. The original *Command & Conquer: Renegade*, released in 2002, was the first and only first-person shooter in the franchise's history. It received "generally favorable reviews" but was noted for some noticeable problems, with critics pointing out that it was developer Westwood Studios' first attempt at a shooter. Despite its flaws, the game's unique multiplayer mode, which blended FPS combat with the strategic base-destruction elements of the RTS series, garnered a cult following. *Renegade X* expands on this hybrid gameplay, where each team aims to destroy the other's base. Destroying specific buildings, like a power plant or barracks, impacts the opposing team's abilities, such as disabling base defenses or limiting infantry choices. Players earn credits from Tiberium harvesters to purchase a wide array of infantry classes and over a dozen different vehicles to aid in their assault. The 1.0 release of *Renegade X* focuses primarily on bug fixes and balance adjustments to create a more polished experience. A significant addition is the new map "CnC-City," a long-awaited adaptation of a map from the original *Renegade*. The game supports 64-player servers and also offers extensive bot support for offline play. The development team, Totem Arts, is a non-profit, volunteer studio that has received encouragement from former Westwood developers and even EA Games. Their work on *Renegade X* has won multiple awards throughout its long development cycle, including accolades for "Best Multiplayer" and "Best Vehicle Set" during its modding phase. With *Renegade X* now officially complete, Totem Arts is not finished with the *Command & Conquer* universe. The team is also developing *Firestorm*, a first-person reimagining of *Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun*. This upcoming project is described as even more ambitious, promising larger maps and a different style of multiplayer gameplay.
