Athleisure Defined for Transitions

Crystal Z defined athleisure as stretchy pieces like leggings, joggers, hoodies, and sneakers designed for gym-to-street transitions. Your Next Shoes spotlighted Alessandra Ambrosio's Pilates look featuring ribbed Alo Yoga sweats with Adidas Arkyn sneakers.

The term "athleisure" may seem recent, but its roots trace back to the 1970s, first appearing in a 1979 issue of Nation's Business to describe clothing for those wanting to appear athletic. The concept of comfortable, interchangeable separates for a more active lifestyle, however, began with "sportswear" in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The modern athleisure movement was significantly propelled by Lululemon, founded in 1998. By focusing on high-quality, stylish yoga apparel that could be worn outside the studio, Lululemon carved out a new premium category in the fashion world, blending performance with everyday style. Los Angeles-based Alo Yoga, founded in 2007 by Danny Harris and Marco DeGeorge, further defined the "studio-to-street" ethos. The brand, whose name is an acronym for "air, land, ocean," gained significant traction through organic celebrity adoption, with figures like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber frequently photographed in their gear. The global athleisure market was valued at approximately $358.07 billion in 2023 and is projected to continue its significant growth. This expansion is fueled by a broader societal shift towards wellness and more casual dress codes, a trend massively accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of remote work. Adidas leaned into the trend with its women's exclusive Arkyn sneaker, which launched in April 2018. The shoe was designed to merge streetwear and sportswear, combining a vintage-inspired look with modern technology like a mesh upper and a full-length Boost midsole for comfort. The marketing campaign for the Arkyn featured a collective of influential women, including model Kendall Jenner, to emphasize its design for creative and defiant individuals. This strategy highlighted the sneaker's versatility, positioning it for more than just athletic activities.
