US & Israel Launch Joint Strike on Iran

United States forces, in coordination with Israel, have launched an attack on targets inside Iran. The joint military action comes amid escalating tensions and challenges in reviving the Iran nuclear deal, though specific targets and the extent of the impact have not yet been disclosed.

This joint military action follows a significant U.S. military buildup in the Middle East, the largest since 2003, which includes the deployment of two aircraft carrier strike groups, the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford. This concentration of forces, involving at least 16 ships and over 100 advanced fighter jets, was initiated in late January 2026 amid rising tensions. The strikes come on the heels of failed nuclear negotiations in Geneva, mediated by Oman, which concluded in late February 2026. Despite reports of some progress, significant disagreements remained over the extent of Iran's uranium enrichment and the timeline for sanctions relief. Internally, Iran has been rocked by major anti-government protests that began in December 2025 over economic hardships. In January 2026, the government responded with a severe crackdown and a nationwide internet blackout that lasted for more than two weeks. Prior to this operation, Iran had dramatically accelerated its nuclear program, enriching uranium up to 60% purity, a level close to weapons-grade. As of late 2024, estimates suggested Iran possessed enough highly enriched uranium to produce material for 5-6 bombs in less than two weeks. This stockpile was a primary motivation for a previous, less extensive, joint US-Israeli strike in June 2025 that targeted key nuclear facilities. The current operation, codenamed "Operation Epic Fury" by the U.S., reportedly aims to destroy Iran's ballistic missile arsenal, its navy, and the remnants of its nuclear program. In the opening hours, Israeli forces struck approximately 500 military targets, while U.S. cyber and space commands worked to disrupt Iran's ability to respond. In retaliation, Iran has launched hundreds of missiles and drones at U.S. military installations and allied nations across the Gulf, including Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Iran possesses a diverse arsenal of short and medium-range ballistic missiles and has demonstrated the use of drone swarms in past conflicts. This conflict represents a significant escalation following a 12-day war between Israel and Iran in June 2025 and a series of direct exchanges of fire in 2024. Iran's regional proxies, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, have also initiated attacks, drawing a military response from Israel.
