Cities spending on Michelin

Local governments are writing big checks to court Michelin attention — Minneapolis agreed to pay $250,000 a year for three years as part of its Michelin arrangement. (fox9.com) At the same time, Pittsburgh was named among six new cities joining the Michelin Guide in 2027, which local outlets say has organizers scrambling to spotlight the Steel City’s restaurants. A restaurant guide that started as a tire-company side project has turned into something cities now buy into like a sports event or convention bid. Minneapolis agreed to pay $250,000 a year for three years to be included in Michelin’s new American Great Lakes guide. (fox9.com) That Great Lakes guide is not a statewide list. Michelin said the first edition will cover exactly six cities — Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh — with the inaugural selections announced in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) Minneapolis’ deal runs from 2027 through 2029, and the money is coming through the Minneapolis Tourism Improvement District rather than the city’s general fund. Meet Minneapolis told local outlets that only restaurants inside Minneapolis city limits will be eligible, which leaves out Saint Paul and the rest of the metro. (mprnews.org) (fox9.com) Pittsburgh is entering the same regional guide on a different timetable in the public conversation. Local coverage there focused on the scramble to get ready for the 2027 reveal, while VisitPITTSBURGH pitched Michelin as a way to pull more visitors and spotlight more than 500 restaurants in the city alone. (cbsnews.com) (visitpittsburgh.com) Michelin says its inspectors are anonymous and already dining in these cities now. The company also says the full list will be unveiled at a Michelin Guide American Great Lakes ceremony in 2027, with the exact date still to be announced. (guide.michelin.com) (cbsnews.com) The awkward part is that Michelin’s expansion model now openly overlaps with tourism marketing. Michelin’s own materials list destination partners around the world, and other U.S. places have publicly debated the price tag, including Virginia, which Axios reported declined a $360,000 proposal in 2025. (guide.michelin.com) (axios.com) Cities still pay because the guide is one of the few restaurant brands that can change travel behavior on its own. In Michelin’s announcement, tourism agencies in Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh all framed the guide less as a food scorecard than as a machine for hotel nights, restaurant sales, and national attention. (guide.michelin.com) (visitpittsburgh.com) That is why Minneapolis writing a $750,000 three-year check is not really about one star or two stars. It is a bet that a red guidebook can do for restaurants what a major festival does for hotels: give outsiders a reason to book the trip. (kstp.com) (fox9.com) The catch is that Michelin coverage is narrow even when the marketing is broad. Minneapolis critics told FOX 9 they worry the guide could pull attention toward a small slice of fine dining, while many neighborhood restaurants that define a city’s food culture may never appear in the book at all. (fox9.com) So two Rust Belt cities are now making the same wager in public. If Michelin stars land in Minneapolis or Pittsburgh in 2027, local officials will call the spending proof of concept; if they do not, taxpayers and hotel operators will have a very easy number to point to.
