SF Acclaimed Thai Team Opens 'Tur'
The creators of the acclaimed San Francisco Thai restaurant Khao Tiew have just opened a new brunch spot called Tur. The menu features inventive Southeast Asian flavors, like duck breast in panang curry and short rib fried rice with a soy-cured egg.
The team behind Tur, co-owners Wipada Rattanapun and Arkaranit Dusitnitsakul, are doubling down on San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood. Their first restaurant, Khao Tiew, is located just down the street from the new brunch spot. Khao Tiew opened in 2024 and quickly gained recognition, with the San Francisco Chronicle naming it the "best new Thai restaurant" of the year. The restaurant is known for drawing long lines, with wait times that can extend for hours, for dishes like its popular beef tallow fried rice. Tur takes over the space formerly occupied by the breakfast institution Squat and Gobble, which closed in January after 32 years in business. The new restaurant will be helmed by chef Varunthorn Ratanakachain, who previously worked at the Asian brunch spot Darla Café in Saratoga. The name "Tur" (เธอ) is a Thai pronoun for "you" that is considered softer, more polite, and can be endearing. It's often used between friends or couples. The menu at Tur will focus on breakfast and brunch with influences from across Asia. While the final menu is still being developed, potential dishes include Thai-style congee and duck confit, reflecting a "homestyle" cooking approach. Tur's opening is part of a larger trend in the Bay Area of brunch restaurants with strong Asian influences. Other recent examples include Rice and Shine in San Francisco and The Peach in Oakland.
