OpenAI is discussing a new private-equity-backed vehicle that would put its own engineers inside companies using its artificial intelligence tools. (reuters.com) Reuters reported on April 22 that OpenAI may commit as much as $1.5 billion to the venture, based on a Financial Times report citing people familiar with the talks. Bloomberg reported in March that the proposed venture carried a roughly $10 billion pre-money valuation. (reuters.com) (bloomberg.com) Bloomberg said the talks involved private-equity firms including TPG, Brookfield Asset Management, and Bain Capital. Tech Funding News and other follow-on reports said the internal nickname for the effort was “DeployCo.” (bloomberg.com) (techfundingnews.com) The basic business problem is not building a model; it is fitting the model into payroll systems, call centers, software teams, and internal data. OpenAI already sells ChatGPT Enterprise as a workplace product connected to company data, and its business page says it serves more than 5 million business users. (openai.com 1) (openai.com 2) OpenAI has been moving more of the company toward that deployment work. In May 2025, OpenAI said Fidji Simo would join to lead its Applications business, and OpenAI’s current site lists her as chief executive of “AGI Deployment.” (openai.com) (theinformation.com) A private-equity structure would give OpenAI a faster route into companies already owned by buyout firms, which control large portfolios in health care, retail, manufacturing, and finance. Several reports said the venture would focus on those portfolio companies rather than wait for each customer to buy software one by one. (techfundingnews.com) (capacityglobal.com) The talks also fit OpenAI’s broader financing push. OpenAI said on March 31, 2025, that SoftBank would invest up to $40 billion in the company and its affiliates, and CNBC reported that round valued OpenAI at $300 billion. (softbank.com) (cnbc.com) Neither Reuters nor Bloomberg reported a signed deal, and Reuters said it could not immediately verify the Financial Times report independently. Until OpenAI or the firms announce terms, DeployCo remains a set of talks that would turn OpenAI from a model supplier into a hands-on enterprise operator. (reuters.com) (bloomberg.com)
