Ghost Hits $10M ARR, Hires PM

Open-source publishing platform Ghost just hit $10M in annual recurring revenue as a bootstrapped non-profit. The company, which says its indie publishers generate ~$130M, is now hiring for a fully remote Product Manager to support its growth.

Ghost's journey to $10M ARR was a deliberate marathon, not a venture-funded sprint. Founder John O'Nolan, a former WordPress UI team lead, started Ghost in 2013 with a clear product philosophy: build a platform focused solely on professional publishing, cutting out the bloat of multi-purpose content management systems. This focus was a direct response to WordPress's evolution into a generalized website builder. The company operates as a non-profit foundation, a structure chosen to ensure it always serves its users rather than investors. All revenue, including the now $10M in annual recurring revenue from its Ghost(Pro) managed hosting service, is reinvested directly into developing the open-source software. This sustainable model allows for long-term, user-centric product decisions, free from the pressure of quarterly shareholder demands or an eventual acquisition. Ghost's product development has been guided by a principle of "focus over features." Instead of chasing every feature request, the team prioritizes what will benefit the majority of its users most of the time. This lean approach is a necessity for a bootstrapped company and has resulted in a fast, modern Node.js-based platform that appeals to creators who value speed and a clean user experience. The decision to hire a dedicated Product Manager signals a new phase of maturation for Ghost. With a rapidly growing user base, which nearly doubled between 2022 and 2024, the need for a more structured approach to product strategy is evident. This role will be crucial in balancing the needs of its core user base of independent creators with the demands of larger companies like Bombardier and RingCentral that also use the platform. This new PM will step into a unique, fully remote environment that has existed since 2013. They will be responsible for navigating a product roadmap that is currently internal and guided by O'Nolan's vision. A key challenge will be to formalize product processes while preserving the agile, mission-driven culture that has defined Ghost's success. The role presents a distinct opportunity to shape the future of a platform that empowers independent publishers. Unlike a typical PM role focused on maximizing profit, this position will involve making product decisions that align with a non-profit's mission to advance the future of online media. The success of this new hire will be measured not just by growth in ARR, but by the continued success of the creators Ghost serves.
