Base Batches Launches with $1M for Builders
A new program called Base Batches launched on February 24th, offering up to $1 million in funding for builders and founders. The initiative is designed to support early-stage creators, including those who have not gone through the Y Combinator accelerator program.
- The Base Batches program is structured in three parts: a buildathon, an incubator program, and a final Demo Day where teams can pitch to investors for a share of up to $1,00 to,000 in funding. - The program features dedicated tracks for different types of builders, including a "Startup Track" for early-stage teams that have raised less than $250,000, and a "Student Track" for university students. - Top teams selected for the Startup Track receive a $10,000 grant and are accepted into an 8-week virtual program, with a minimum of three teams receiving a $50,000 investment from the Base Ecosystem Fund. - YC General Partner Ankit Gupta advises founders to find early adopters by looking for those with a "burning problem," as they are less price-sensitive and provide more direct, valuable feedback. - To identify target users before you have a product, become an active participant in niche online communities like Reddit, Facebook Groups, or industry-specific forums where potential customers discuss their problems. - For cold outreach, personalize every email by researching the recipient and focusing the message on solving their specific problems related to time, image, or money (a "TIM" problem). Personalized emails can increase open rates from an average of 21.3% to over 30%. - A core Y Combinator principle is to launch early with a "minimum evolvable product" rather than a perfect one; this allows you to create a wider surface area for initial users to discover you. - YC advises charging customers from the beginning, even if it's a small amount, because paying users provide significantly sharper and more honest feedback than those using a product for free.
