Rock Music's Big Comeback

Rock music is experiencing a massive resurgence with Deftones selling out huge arenas and Turnstile recently winning multiple Grammys. Fans are noting rock's return to mainstream popularity after years of being overshadowed by other genres.

The resurgence isn't just a feeling; it's in the numbers. In the U.S., rock is the second most popular genre for on-demand audio streaming, with 123.3 billion streams, and it's showing the highest growth rate compared to 2024. This surge is also visible in live music, with attendance for hard rock and metal shows up 14% in 2025, now accounting for 13% of all arena and stadium concerts. A major catalyst for this revival is social media, particularly TikTok. The platform's algorithm favors high-energy, emotionally intense sounds, making classic guitar riffs and breakdowns from bands like Nirvana and The White Stripes perfect for short-form video content. This has created a feedback loop, reintroducing older rock catalogs to Gen Z and driving up streaming numbers for legacy artists. Beyond established names, a new wave of bands is breaking into the mainstream. The genre-bending band Sleep Token saw their album "Even in Arcadia" debut at #1 on the UK Albums Chart. Similarly, Turnstile's 2025 album "Never Enough" debuted at number nine on the U.S. Billboard 200, demonstrating that new rock bands can make a significant commercial impact. This comeback is also being fueled by legacy bands returning to the spotlight. The reunion tour of Oasis created a massive cultural moment, and other iconic bands from the 90s are also making comebacks. These returns, coupled with documentaries on artists like Led Zeppelin, are introducing a younger generation to classic rock and boosting streaming figures for these legendary acts. While rock's popularity with new releases has previously lagged, this trend is shifting. For years, the genre's market share was dominated by catalog sales of music older than 18 months. However, the chart success of new artists like Sleep Token and Turnstile indicates a renewed interest in contemporary rock. The film and television industry has also played a role in rock's renewed visibility. The massive success of rock biopics like "Bohemian Rhapsody" has demonstrated a large market for rock-related stories. Additionally, the placement of rock songs in popular TV shows has helped introduce the genre to new and diverse audiences.
