IAFF Opens Registration for Fitness Program
The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has opened registration for its "Fit to Thrive" course. The 6-week program, starting March 23, is designed to train peer fitness leaders within fire departments, focusing on long-term wellness and health.
The IAFF's "Fit to Thrive" program is an evolution of the earlier Peer Fitness Trainer certification, designed to create fitness leaders within fire departments. It's part of the broader Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI), a joint labor-management program started by the IAFF and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) to combat the high rates of duty-related deaths and injuries. The program's core is promoting long-term, sustainable, and healthy behaviors, recognizing that mandated fitness programs alone are often ineffective. This focus on functional fitness and overall wellness directly supports a candidate's preparation for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). The CPAT, also developed by the IAFF and IAFC, is a validated, pass/fail test designed to simulate the physical demands of the job, from stair climbs with weighted packs to hose drags and forcible entry. The Seattle Fire Department uses the CPAT as part of its pre-employment selection process, making functional, high-intensity training critical for applicants. Locally, IAFF Local 27 in Seattle emphasizes a culture of health and wellness. The Seattle Fire Fighters Healthcare Trust (SFFHCT) recently launched the "MyPath Program," a comprehensive weight loss and wellness initiative tailored to the unique challenges firefighters face, such as shift work. This program provides personalized coaching and nutritional education from registered dietitians. Beyond official programs, the Seattle Fire Foundation actively raises funds to purchase and update fitness equipment in fire stations, recognizing the importance of on-shift exercise for both physical and mental health. For aspiring firefighters, the Seattle Fire Department offers a "Fire Prep" program specifically designed to give applicants a realistic understanding of the physical demands of recruit school and to help them develop foundational skills and conditioning.
