OpenAI Memo: Agents First

OpenAI is telling staff that enterprise buyers now want artificial intelligence agents, not just chatbots, and that shift is reshaping its alliances. (cnbc.com) In a memo sent Sunday and viewed by CNBC, chief revenue officer Denise Dresser wrote that OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft had been “foundational” but had also limited its ability to reach customers that build on Amazon Bedrock. She said demand since the Amazon deal announced on February 27, 2026 had been “frankly staggering.” (cnbc.com) OpenAI and Amazon said on February 27 that Amazon would invest up to $50 billion, that OpenAI would use 2 gigawatts of Amazon Trainium capacity, and that Amazon Web Services would become the exclusive third-party cloud distributor for OpenAI Frontier. Frontier is OpenAI’s platform for building, deploying, and managing teams of agents inside business systems. (openai.com) An agent is software that can keep context, call tools, and carry work across multiple steps instead of answering one prompt at a time. OpenAI and Amazon said their planned Stateful Runtime Environment is meant to give those systems memory, access to software tools, and links to identity and compute inside Amazon Web Services. (openai.com) That changes the sales fight in corporate technology from selling a model to selling the layer that runs models inside a company’s existing software. In the memo, Dresser said enterprises now expect systems that can reason, use tools, and operate across workflows, according to CNBC’s account. (cnbc.com) OpenAI’s push comes as rivals are chasing the same customers. CNBC reported that Anthropic’s Claude has established itself as a leader in enterprise artificial intelligence, while Google Gemini is also competing aggressively for corporate accounts. (cnbc.com) The Microsoft relationship is not disappearing. Microsoft said on October 28, 2025 that OpenAI remains its frontier-model partner, that Azure keeps API exclusivity until artificial general intelligence, and that the revised agreement still preserves core parts of the partnership while allowing each company more room to pursue other products. CNBC reported that Dresser said OpenAI’s enterprise business now accounts for 40% of revenue and is on track to reach parity with its consumer business by the end of 2026. (cnbc.com) Axios reported on April 13 that the memo also framed the contest as a direct fight with Anthropic while casting Amazon as a more useful route into enterprise computing than Microsoft.
