CBS Buried Hunter Biden Story

CBS executives allegedly buried the Hunter Biden laptop story until after the 2022 midterms to aid Democrats, sparking outrage and calls to make it go viral. This revelation comes as polls on Trump support levels are trending alongside talk of midterm primaries in Texas, Arkansas, and North Carolina that could impact Senate control. The timing suggests coordinated media influence on electoral outcomes.

The original Hunter Biden laptop story, published by the New York Post on October 14, 2020, detailed emails suggesting Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, to a top executive at the Ukrainian energy firm Burisma. This correspondence contradicted Joe Biden's previous statements that he had never discussed his son's overseas business dealings. The story was based on data recovered from a laptop reportedly left at a Delaware repair shop in April 2019. Shortly after the story broke, a letter signed by 51 former senior intelligence officials was publicly released, claiming the laptop "has all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation." This narrative was amplified by some media outlets and political commentators. However, by May 2023, no public evidence had emerged to support the claim of Russian disinformation, and the FBI had concluded in 2019 that the laptop was genuinely Hunter Biden's. CBS News correspondent Catherine Herridge has since claimed that her in-depth reporting on the laptop's contents was repeatedly blocked by network executives. Herridge stated she had confirmed reporting about Hunter Biden's business dealings, including a forensic review of the laptop, but was told it was not a story CBS was interested in pursuing until after the 2022 midterm elections. The contents of the laptop included details of Hunter Biden's financial arrangements with foreign companies. For instance, entities controlled by Hunter Biden and his uncle received $4.8 million from the Chinese energy conglomerate CEFC China Energy over 14 months. This included a $1 million retainer for representing a CEFC official, Patrick Ho, who was later charged in a bribery scheme. Hunter Biden also admitted in court to receiving $664,000 from a CCP-backed company. The 2022 midterm elections determined control of a closely divided Congress. In the Arkansas Republican primary for U.S. Senate on May 24, 2022, incumbent John Boozman, who was endorsed by Donald Trump, won with over 58% of the vote against challengers who questioned his loyalty to the former president. In the Texas primary on March 1, 2022, incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott and Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke easily won their respective nominations for the general election. The initial dismissal and subsequent validation of the laptop story have fueled discussions about the media's role in shaping electoral outcomes. Studies on media effects show that the choice of which stories to cover can influence voter perception and behavior. The suppression of certain information, whether through omission or framing, can impact the public's understanding of candidates and issues.
