UAE Population Jumps by 200K

The UAE population increased by over 200,000 in a single year as of 2024, reflecting the country's economic dynamism and status as a global magnet for talent and investment. Dubai remains the heart of this transformation with a "colourful mix of indigenous and immigrant populations" driving the UAE's evolution from fishing villages to world-class megacities.

The UAE's total population surged by 615,687 in 2024, reaching nearly 11.3 million, according to the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre. This significant increase is largely composed of foreign workers and professionals, with males accounting for about 64% of the total population, reflecting the labor demands of the expanding economy. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are at the forefront of this expansion. Dubai's population crossed the 4 million mark for the first time in 2025, having added 170,000 new residents in 2024 alone. Similarly, Abu Dhabi's population grew by 7.5% in 2024, reaching 4.14 million people. This population boom is directly linked to robust economic performance, particularly in the non-oil sectors which now account for nearly 75% of the nation's GDP. In the first nine months of 2024, the UAE's real GDP grew by 3.8%, with the non-oil economy expanding by 4.5%. Key sectors driving this growth include finance, transportation, construction, and real estate. Government initiatives and visa reforms are a primary catalyst for attracting global talent and investment. The expansion of the Golden Visa program, which offers long-term residency to investors, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals, has made it easier for foreigners to establish deeper roots in the country, further fueling population growth. The influx of new residents is creating high demand in the real estate market and has led to a surge in new jobs. In the first quarter of 2024, the UAE saw an 8% increase in new job opportunities compared to the last quarter of 2023, with the real estate sector leading the growth at 11%. This rapid growth is part of a long-term strategy to transform the UAE into a global economic hub. The Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, for example, is a comprehensive blueprint designed to accommodate a projected population of 5.8 million residents by 2040 through sustainable development and enhanced infrastructure.
