Bitwise Donates ETF Profits to Bitcoin Devs

Crypto asset manager Bitwise is donating $233,000 to support Bitcoin's open-source developers. The gift is part of the firm's pledge to donate 10% of the gross profits from its Bitcoin ETF (BITB) each year.

The donation is directed to three non-profit organizations dedicated to supporting Bitcoin's infrastructure: Brink, OpenSats, and the Human Rights Foundation's Bitcoin Development Fund. These organizations are crucial for funding the global network of volunteer programmers who maintain and secure the Bitcoin network. Brink focuses on strengthening the Bitcoin protocol through research and development, offering grants and fellowships to both established and emerging developers. OpenSats, a 501(c)(3) public charity, provides funding for a wide array of Bitcoin-related projects, including software development, education, and research to enhance Bitcoin's accessibility and decentralization. The Human Rights Foundation's Bitcoin Development Fund specifically supports projects that make Bitcoin a more effective tool for activists and journalists in politically challenging environments. The fund aims to bolster privacy, security, and censorship resistance to counteract financial surveillance and repression. Bitwise's commitment is part of a growing trend of corporate entities supporting the open-source foundations of the crypto ecosystem. Other prominent firms like VanEck have also pledged a percentage of their Bitcoin ETF profits to support core developers, acknowledging that all investors benefit from their work. This model of corporate patronage is vital for the sustainability of open-source projects like Bitcoin, which are not owned by any single entity. The volunteer developers are responsible for crucial maintenance, security enhancements, and protocol upgrades that keep the network running. The pledge to donate a percentage of profits is a long-term commitment, with Bitwise planning to make these donations annually for at least the next ten years. This recurring support provides a more stable funding source for developers who have historically worked on a volunteer basis or through sporadic donations. This initiative extends beyond Bitcoin, as Bitwise has made a similar pledge to donate 10% of the profits from its Ethereum ETF to support Ethereum's open-source developers.
