The K-code Mustangs were the highest performance Mustangs Ford offered at the time, equipped with a 271-horsepower 289 cubic-inch V8 engine. This high-performance engine included upgraded pistons, connecting rods, carburetors, and cylinder heads. The "K" in K-code refers to the engine code on the vehicle identification number (VIN). The K-code option was expensive, resulting in low production numbers; less than 1% of Mustangs from 1965 to 1967 had this high-performance engine. In 1965, Ford produced 559,451 Mustangs, but only 7,273 had the K-code. These Mustangs came exclusively with a four-speed manual transmission. The fastback body style accounted for approximately 9% of the 1965-66 Mustang production. The combination of the K-code engine and fastback body makes this particular Mustang a rare and desirable find for collectors. The GT Equipment Group and the fastback shape add to the car's value. Poppy Red was one of the original colors offered on the 1965 Mustang. However, specific production numbers for K-code fastbacks in Poppy Red are difficult to find because Ford did not keep detailed records. Regardless, the color enhances the classic appeal of this Mustang.
