Silver Threatens Draft Pick Removal

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remains open to restructuring the draft and even considering the removal of draft picks from teams engaging in overtly non-competitive behavior. This follows recent six-figure fines levied against both the Utah Jazz and Indiana Pacers for "overt" tanking.

- The NBA's draft lottery system was first introduced in 1985 to discourage teams from losing games on purpose to secure the top pick. The system has been modified several times since, with the most recent change in 2019 flattening the odds for the teams with the three worst records, giving them each a 14% chance of receiving the number one pick. - The Utah Jazz were fined $500,000 for "conduct detrimental to the league" after benching starters Lauri Markkanen and Jaren Jackson Jr. for the entire fourth quarter in two recent games, despite the outcomes being in doubt. The Indiana Pacers received a $100,000 fine for violating the league's Player Participation Policy by sitting Pascal Siakam and two other starters in a game against the Jazz when an independent physician determined they were able to play. - Adam Silver has stated that the league is seeing "behavior that is worse this year than we've seen in recent memory" regarding tanking. He acknowledged that the perception of a very strong 2026 draft class is a contributing factor to this behavior. - While teams have previously forfeited second-round draft picks for violating free agency tampering rules, taking a pick for non-competitive reasons would be an unprecedented step. Recent examples of teams losing picks for tampering include the Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls, and Miami Heat. - One anonymous NBA team reportedly told an ESPN analyst they would "write a blank check" to cover any potential fines if it meant securing a top-three pick in the highly anticipated 2026 draft. - The league's Competition Committee is re-examining the entire draft lottery system in light of the recent issues. Silver has emphasized that "every possible remedy" is being considered to curtail tanking.
