Apple May Use Google Servers for AI Siri
Apple is reportedly considering using Google's cloud servers to store and process data for its next-generation, AI-powered Siri. The potential move signals a major shift in Apple's data infrastructure strategy and would deepen the operational ties between the two tech rivals, raising new questions about data privacy and competition.
This partnership signals a major catch-up effort for Apple, whose own internal attempts to overhaul Siri have faced significant delays. The company's revamped AI assistant reportedly failed to meet internal quality standards, prompting the tech giant to leverage a mature, established technology from a competitor to reduce its time-to-market. The multi-year deal is reportedly structured as a cloud-computing contract worth around $1 billion annually to Google. It provides Apple with access to Google's powerful Gemini models, including a specialized 1.2 trillion-parameter version that will form the basis of new "Apple Foundation Models". This move marks a dramatic pivot from Apple's historical reliance on its own in-house infrastructure. For years, Apple software chief Craig Federighi vetoed using Google Cloud due to privacy concerns. However, Apple's own "Private Cloud Compute" system has been reportedly underutilized, and its chips are not optimized for large-scale AI workloads like Gemini. To make the deal possible, Google implemented changes to its security systems in 2023 that satisfied Apple's stringent privacy requirements. Both companies have stated that the AI features will maintain Apple's industry-leading privacy standards, with Apple controlling the user interfaces of any applications that call on Google's models. The first wave of features from this collaboration is expected to roll out with iOS updates in 2026. Users can anticipate a far more capable Siri that can understand context from on-screen images, search through files, and interact with apps like email, music, and photos.
