Belgium Seizes Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Oil Tanker

In a major sanctions enforcement action, Belgian authorities, with French naval support, have seized a Russian oil tanker in the North Sea. The vessel is suspected of being part of a 'shadow fleet' used by Moscow to illegally export energy and evade Western sanctions, signaling a tougher European stance on illicit Russian trade.

The seized tanker, identified as the Ethera (IMO 9387279), was intercepted during a mission codenamed "Operation Blue Intruder" in Belgium's exclusive economic zone. The 180-meter vessel, built in 2008, was sailing under a fraudulent Guinean flag and has been escorted to the port of Zeebrugge. A criminal investigation has been opened, and the Russian captain is being questioned by authorities. This operation marks a significant step-up in enforcement for European nations, moving from sanctions lists and financial penalties to direct military boarding and seizure of vessels at sea. The action was a coordinated effort between Belgian special forces, who boarded the tanker via helicopter, and the French Navy, which provided support. French President Emmanuel Macron called the seizure "a major blow to the shadow fleet." The Ethera is a medium-range tanker with a deadweight capacity of 46,606 tonnes. Based on the price of Brent crude oil on March 2, 2026, a full cargo could be valued at over $26.5 million. These illicit shipments are a key source of revenue for Moscow to finance its war efforts in Ukraine. The vessel is linked to a broader international sanctions evasion network. It is part of a vast shipping empire reportedly controlled by Mohammad Hossein Shamkhani, the son of a senior Iranian political advisor. The tanker is affiliated with the UAE-based company Fractal Marine DMCC, which has been previously sanctioned by the UK for its role in transporting Russian oil.
