A new vlog documents Day 4 of the legendary W Trek in Patagonia, focusing on the challenging Grey Glacier section. The W Trek remains one of the world's most demanding multi-day hikes, testing endurance and weather adaptability.
The Grey Glacier is a massive wall of shifting blue ice, measuring approximately 6 kilometers wide and rising up to 30 meters at its face. It is one of the most visited sights in Torres del Paine National Park and forms part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the largest ice mass in the Southern Hemisphere outside of Antarctica. The trek from Refugio Paine Grande to the Grey Glacier area typically covers 11 kilometers and takes about three to four hours. Along this section, hikers are treated to constant views of Lago Grey, often dotted with floating icebergs that have calved from the glacier. Trekkers on the W Trek stay in a mix of accommodations that must be booked far in advance. Options range from bringing your own tent to serviced campsites with pre-pitched tents, and shared dorm-style rooms in rustic lodges known as "refugios." Some locations, like Los Cuernos, even offer private cabins. The entire W Trek route is a one-way journey of roughly 74 to 83 kilometers (about 46 miles). Most hikers complete the trail in a span of four to five days, though some itineraries can extend to six. Patagonia's weather is famously unpredictable, with fierce winds and the possibility of sudden rain showers at any time of year. The main hiking season runs from November through April, with the peak summer months of January and February seeing the most crowds but also the warmest temperatures. The W-shaped route connects three distinct, dramatic valleys. Besides the Grey Glacier valley, the trek also traverses the French Valley, known for its hanging glaciers, and the Ascencio Valley, which leads to the iconic granite spires of the Torres del Paine.
