Bate Bay Named Australia's Best Beaches
Bate Bay beaches in Sydney's Sutherland Shire have been named Australia's best by Tourism Australia, topping national rankings for natural beauty, accessibility, and visitor satisfaction. The recognition could boost travel interest and local tourism in the Sydney area.
The annual ranking was compiled by official beach ambassador Brad Farmer AM, who assessed over 12,500 beaches nationwide. Bate Bay's collection of nine beaches ticked almost every box of a 130-point evaluation criteria that includes environmental condition, safety, access, facilities, and community connection. This marks a shift from the 2025 winner, Bay of Fires in Tasmania, placing a metropolitan beach system at the top of the national rankings. Farmer, a conservationist who has been studying Australian beaches for nearly four decades, described this year's list as a celebration of "quiet, soulful spots." The Bate Bay area encompasses a 4.8-kilometer coastal sweep, making it Sydney's longest continuous stretch of sand. It includes the popular beaches of Greenhills, Wanda, Elouera, and North and South Cronulla, as well as four ocean pools and the sheltered waters of Gunnamatta Bay. Accessibility was a key factor in the win; the beaches are easily reached via a direct train from Sydney's CBD, a journey of about 49 minutes. This contrasts with more remote winners of previous years and highlights the area as an accessible "hidden gem," according to Farmer. Sutherland Shire, located on the traditional lands of the Gweagal people of the Dharawal nation, sees approximately 1.1 million visitors each year. The recognition is expected to drive further tourism, which contributed over $2 billion in total sales to the local economy in the 2023/24 financial year. Other beaches making the top 10 for 2026 included Pinky Beach in Western Australia, Beachcomber Cove in Queensland, and Tallow Beach in New South Wales. An inland location, Ellery Creek Big Hole in the Northern Territory, also made the list.
