Indian Railways plans to swap in Air-Conditioned Three-Tier Economy coaches on 14 trains from June 15, replacing one standard Third Air-Conditioned coach on each service. (zeenews.india.com) West Central Railway officials said the change is aimed at offering lower fares and clearing more waiting-list demand during the summer travel rush. The rollout starts with train number 12185, the Rani Kamlapati–Rewa Express, from June 15. (zeenews.india.com) The list published by Zee News includes services linked to Rani Kamlapati, Hazrat Nizamuddin, New Delhi, Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, Singrauli, Chopan, Dhanbad and Rewa. The coach swap is scheduled in stages between June 15 and June 24, with one coach changed on each train. (zeenews.india.com) Air-Conditioned Three-Tier Economy, sold as class 3E, is the lower-priced version of standard Third Air-Conditioned travel. Railway Board restored separate 3E booking and fare rules on March 22, 2023, after ending a short-lived unified fare structure. (contents.irctc.co.in) That matters for passengers because 3E is not just a renamed 3A coach. Indian Railways’ fare circular says future bookings in these coaches are to be made as 3E, and any fare difference from earlier 3A bookings is to be refunded automatically for online tickets. (contents.irctc.co.in) The tradeoff is density. Zee Business reported that a standard Third Air-Conditioned coach has 72 berths, while an Air-Conditioned Three-Tier Economy coach has 83 because it adds an extra side berth in each bay. (zeebiz.com) Zee Business also reported that 3E fares are about 8% lower than standard 3A fares. The same report said the coaches include individual air vents, reading lamps, USB charging points, closed-circuit television cameras and passenger information systems. (zeebiz.com) The June coach mix change does not create a new class; it expands a class Indian Railways has already defined and priced separately. For travelers on these 14 trains, the practical change is simpler: more air-conditioned berths in the same rake, at a lower fare than the coach being replaced. (contents.irctc.co.in)
