India Offers Visa Relief
India's Ministry of External Affairs assured stranded foreign travelers will receive visa relief due to the West Asia crisis. The measure provides critical flexibility for international visitors caught in the region during escalating tensions.
The current visa relief measures are a response to significant air travel disruptions following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This event triggered widespread airspace closures over several Middle Eastern countries, leading to the cancellation of hundreds of international flights. Indian airlines are expected to cancel as many as 444 international flights on March 1 alone due to these airspace restrictions. The impact is significant as the Gulf is a primary travel corridor connecting India to Europe and North America. The Indian Association of Tour Operators has reported a surge in booking cancellations and rescheduling requests, particularly for routes to Europe via Gulf hubs. Foreign nationals in India whose travel plans are affected have been advised to contact their nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). These offices will handle requests for visa extensions and the regularization of stay on a case-by-case basis to prevent visitors from violating immigration norms due to circumstances beyond their control. This is not the first time India has offered such assistance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Home Affairs granted extensions to foreign nationals stranded in the country due to the suspension of international flights, providing a precedent for the current visa relief measures.
