Ethereum L2 Gets $14B+ TVL Boost

Base, Coinbase's Layer 2 solution, is implementing a unified stack for improved speed and reliability, contributing to over $14 billion in total value locked across Ethereum L1 and L2 networks. The upgrades include transparent rollups for better auditability and enhanced EVM L2 compatibility for improved tooling and interoperability.

- The move to a unified stack will double the frequency of network upgrades, with Base planning six smaller hard forks per year instead of the previous three. This allows for more frequent and targeted improvements to the network. - This transition marks a shift from relying on Optimism's OP Stack for core infrastructure to an in-house solution, giving Base more direct control over its development and security. However, Base will continue to collaborate with Optimism as an "OP Enterprise client." - For developers, the enhanced EVM compatibility streamlines the process of deploying existing Ethereum applications on Base, reducing the need for significant code modifications and allowing them to use familiar tools and infrastructure. - The "transparent rollups" feature refers to the public and verifiable nature of the transaction data bundled and submitted to the Ethereum mainnet, which enhances the ability of auditors and users to independently verify the integrity of the Layer 2 chain. - The new unified stack is being built with open-source components, and Base will continue to keep its own codebase and protocol specifications public to encourage community contributions and the development of alternative clients. - Node operators will need to migrate to a new Base client to remain compatible with the network's more frequent upgrade schedule, with the transition expected to occur over the next few months. - This architectural change is designed to improve scalability and reliability as Base aims to onboard a larger user base, driven by its integration with Coinbase's ecosystem of over 110 million verified users. - The upgrade will also accelerate Base's security roadmap, including plans for faster withdrawals and the addition of an independent signer to the Base Security Council to enhance decentralization.
