Dovetail joints, a hallmark of Appalachian log construction, create exceptionally strong, interlocking corners without the need for metal fasteners. This technique, brought to North America by German and Scandinavian immigrants in the 18th century, allows the logs to lock together tightly, providing stability and resistance to the elements. The distinctive shape of the dovetail naturally sheds water, contributing to the longevity of the structure. The birdsmouth cut is a time-tested technique in roofing that allows a rafter to sit securely on the top plate of a wall. This notch, consisting of a "seat cut" and a "heel cut," ensures that the weight of the roof is distributed evenly over the walls, preventing stress on any single point of the structure. As a general rule, the birdsmouth cut should not remove more than one-third of the rafter's depth to maintain its structural integrity. Heritage construction is experiencing a revival as a response to the waste and consumption associated with modern building practices.
