Heathers Musical Off-Broadway Casting

Based on the 1989 cult classic film, *Heathers: The Musical* tells the darkly comedic story of Veronica Sawyer, a high schooler who navigates the treacherous social hierarchy ruled by the powerful and cruel "Heathers." The musical, with book, music, and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy, first premiered off-Broadway in 2014 following a sold-out run in Los Angeles. This current production is a revival at New World Stages, the same venue that hosted its original New York run. Initially planned as a limited engagement, the show's popular demand has led to multiple extensions, with performances now scheduled through early September 2026. Isabella Esler, taking on the lead role of Veronica Sawyer, previously starred as Lydia Deetz in the first national tour of the musical *Beetlejuice*. A California native of Colombian descent, Esler has been performing in musical theater since the age of six. John Cardoza, who will play the rebellious J.D., is no stranger to the stage. He originated the role of Younger Noah in the Broadway production of *The Notebook* and has also starred as Christian in the national tour and Broadway productions of *Moulin Rouge! The Musical*. His Broadway debut was in the ensemble of *Jagged Little Pill*. The musical adaptation embraces the dark themes of the original film, including bullying, teen suicide, and school violence, while adding a high-energy rock score. The show has garnered a dedicated fanbase, known as "Corn Nuts," and has seen successful productions in London's West End, winning the 2019 WhatsOnStage Award for Best New Musical.
