Instagram Tests 'Secret Friends' Feature
Instagram has debuted a 'Secret Friends' feature that allows select users to share content with a private, invite-only circle. While not strictly a location feature, it signals a broader trend toward contextually gated, exclusive experiences that could be adapted for location-triggered content like VIP access at events.
The "Secret Friends" feature is currently a promotional tool, not a general user feature. It was used by Selena Gomez, her husband Benny Blanco, and his friends to promote their new podcast, "Friends Keep Secrets," with a yellow ring around their stories that were visible to all followers. This tactic of creating perceived exclusivity for a broad audience is a novel marketing play on a platform that has offered true private sharing for years. Instagram introduced its "Close Friends" list for Stories back in 2018, allowing users to share content with a manually selected, private audience, identifiable by a green ring. This feature was later expanded to include feed posts, giving creators and brands a powerful tool to nurture communities by offering exclusive content, behind-the-scenes access, and early product launches to their most loyal followers. The concept of exclusive, context-aware experiences is already prevalent in the sports and entertainment industries. Teams and venues use location data from mobile apps and Wi-Fi to manage crowd flow, reduce congestion, and personalize the fan experience. This includes sending targeted offers or helping fans find the shortest concession lines. For VIPs, location-based technology enables premium services like seat upgrades, exclusive discounts, and geofenced access to restricted lounges at sporting events and festivals. Some venues even use location-tracking to provide augmented reality experiences or exclusive video content accessible only in specific areas. In the gaming world, location-based virtual reality (VR) arenas are a growing trend, offering immersive experiences that can't be replicated at home. These venues use physical spaces where players' movements are tracked, blending digital and physical worlds for everything from competitive esports to branded adventures. The location intelligence market is attracting significant investment, with over $2.1 billion invested in startups in this space during 2023-24. The global market was valued at over $1.16 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach more than $2.52 billion by 2032. High-growth opportunities for location technology are also emerging in the health and fitness app market. This sector is expected to grow from $17.81 billion in 2025 to $45.9 billion by 2029. Key trends driving this growth include AI-powered personalization, integration with wearables, and gamification features to keep users engaged.
