Apple Delays Smart Home Display

Apple's smart home display launch is delayed until at least September, reportedly due to ongoing development of a next-gen, AI-powered Siri reported.

The delay highlights the critical role of AI in Apple's smart home strategy, as the company is betting on a next-gen Siri to power the device. This new Siri is intended to function more like a modern chatbot, with improved contextual understanding and the ability to handle more complex tasks. Apple's struggles to upgrade Siri have been ongoing for nearly two years, with the updated assistant facing repeated delays due to technical challenges. These challenges reportedly include issues with speed, accuracy, and integration with other Apple AI models. The company is training its AI models primarily on licensed material and synthetic data, rather than user-generated content. The smart home display, codenamed J490 and sometimes referred to as "HomePad," features a 7-inch display and is designed to act as a central hub for the connected home. It is expected to use facial recognition to personalize the information displayed, showing users their calendars, reminders, and other relevant data. The device's interface is rumored to resemble the circular app layout of the Apple Watch. This delay also underscores the increasing competition in the smart home market, where rivals like Amazon and Google already offer similar devices and AI assistants. Apple is aiming for seamless integration across its ecosystem, requiring Siri to work effectively on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, in addition to the new smart home display.
